Determined - Anyway

My oldest son and I were up early this second day of Kwanzaa. I am already an early riser and so is he. He is visiting from Missouri for the holidays and was getting all this gear packed. Both of us missed to family message that his flight had been cancelled. So we were blissfully going down our checklist, secretly happy that we had the day planned out with plenty of time to drive from Connecticut to New York for his would've been evening flight. "Your flight has been cancelled and the earliest day is January 2nd." Now for me, I smiled a bit and hugged him, thankful that he is an entrepreneur with his own custom sneaker design and restoration business. He is his own boss. "Thanks, Mama." And in the next minute, "I need to call my partners." He and two of his business partners have a unique business in the Kansas City Metro Area that compliments their target audience - studio work, tattoo, custom sneakers. The Empty Nester

I'm adding a new title to my name, The Empty Nester. My husband just finished up an epic whirlwind trip down south to get our daughters settled into their futures. The older one is a rising junior at Thee Jackson State University. We spent about three full days driving around finding her bed and items for her shared apartment. Move-in was Friday. We zipped down to New Orleans to get our youngest settled into her dorm at Xavier University of New Orleans. Another non-stop few days. She moved in on Saturday. When my husband and I sat down on the plane on Monday, we looked at each other. This is it, we are not raising kids anymore. Now, we know and they know that we are not finished with them. They will be home for Christmas and still line items on our budgets. But it is new. Their day-to-day is not our's to plan or manage or keep track of. On Obama, Lewis, and McCain

I came across this article the other day while doing my usual news search. I was disturbed by the way the media, John McCain, and pundits were seeking to denigrate veteran civil rights leader, John Lewis. John Lewis knows about the language and rhetoric that insights whites, particularly poor, undereducated whites, working class whites, to resort to violence when faced with the opportunity to give blacks and other minorities their civil rights. He was hosed, beaten, and had dogs attack him as he stood with Dr. King for nonviolence and justice. The Civil Rights Movement was more than a social movement, it was an economic movement and that is what scared the conservatives of that day. Senator Obama's run for the presidency scares them today. Terms like "Uppity" and "elitist" along with "socialist" have been bantied around about this young man because he dared to be the promise of America.
